What to expect at your first float in Liverpool

Your first float is simple. You arrive, we show you your room, you shower, you lie back in warm salt water, and the time is yours. Here's each step, in order, with the questions people ask before they book.

What happens when I arrive?

Arrive 15 minutes before your appointment. Float Planet is at 97 Dale Street, in Liverpool city centre.

The nearest car park is Q-Park, with 20% off when pre-booked. You will find the link in your email once your session is booked.

We'll take you to your private room and explain how everything works: the lights, the music, the lid, and how to get in and out. Ask anything you like. Then we leave you to it, and nobody comes in during your float.

What should I wear in a float tank?

Your room is private, with its own shower and changing area, and the door shuts. Most guests float without swimwear. If you'd feel more comfortable in a swimsuit, wear one.

What should I bring?

Nothing, unless you wear contact lenses, in which case bring your case. We provide towels, earplugs and toiletries.

Two small things help. Don't shave on the day, because salt water can sting freshly shaved skin. And if you have a small cut, we provide petroleum jelly to cover it.

What happens in the room?

You shower first. Then you step into the float tank, sit down in the water and lie back. The Epsom salt holds you up, so there's no effort involved in staying afloat.

The water is warm and still. You control the light and the music, and you can leave the lid open for the whole session. If you want to sit up, stretch, or get out, you can.

How long is the float?

You choose 60 or 75 minutes when you book. Afterwards you shower off the salt and take your time getting ready. There's no rush back out of the door.

What does it feel like?

At first, most people notice the obvious things. The water is warm. You're lying down with nothing under your back. It's quiet.

After that it varies. Some people settle quickly. Others spend a good part of their first float getting used to it, which is normal. Your second float can feel more familiar because you know what to expect, but every float can be different.

What if I can't switch off?

You don't need to. You can lie back with a busy mind and a full day still going round your head, and it still counts as a float.

Switching off isn't something you can make happen by trying. It tends to come from not trying. So there's no technique to learn and no particular feeling you're meant to reach. You lie back, and the hour is yours to spend however it goes.

If silence feels like a lot for a first time, leave the music on.

Is floating safe?

Floating isn't suitable for anyone under 16. Don't float after alcohol or recreational drugs. If you take medication that causes drowsiness, or you have a medical condition, check with your doctor or prescriber before booking. Salt water can sting if it gets in your eyes, or on freshly shaved or sensitive skin.

Our FAQs page covers skin conditions, periods and more.

Can I float with a friend?

Yes. Each person has their own room and tank, and you can book at the same time so you arrive and leave together.

How much is a first float?

Single floats start from £55, with no membership needed. You choose 60 or 75 minutes.
